IMED1003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Isomerase, Galactose, Anaerobic Glycolysis
Document Summary
Glycolysis: understand the importance of glycolysis where it fits in the process of carbohydrate metabolism, what substrates are involved and what the pathway is used for. Major pathway of glucose catabolism: 6 carbon sugar to pyruvate, first stage of getting from co2 and water and atp from glucose, linear pathway- chain of patterns. Unique- can function aerobically or anaerobically (later lecture) depending on oxygen availability and intact mitochondria: proceeds whether there is oxygen (aerobic capacity) or not (anaerobic capacity, breaks down glucose to pyruvate in the presence of oxygen (aerobic) Allows tissues to survive in oxygen presence or absence e. g. skeletal muscle: muscles prefer to use and store glucose as glycogen and then use it when needed. Rbc lack mitochondria: hence reliant on glucose as fuel metabolised by anaerobic glycolysis. In normal circumstances glucose is the only fuel the brain (cns) can use.
