WRITING UP SOCIOLINGUISTIC RESEARCH
-What is research?
•“The systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and
reach new conclusions” (Oxford English Dictionary)
•Investigation of relevant scholarly literature
-Need to show relevant understanding of relevant literature
•Gap in knowledge
•Research Question
•Methodological decisions
-Explain that you realise that there are gaps in this but due to time constraints it was the best way
to do the research
-Participant sample
•Why did you choose to look at certain groups
•For a case study, justifications will be different
-Introduce participants
-Why did you use these participants
-Use pseudonyms
-Data analysis
•Results/conclusions
-Key elements
•Introduction
-Get straight into it
-Includes:
•A clear problem statement of which sociolinguistic aspect you explore
-What you are examining
•Introduce your case study and why studying it is of any academic interest
