Job design: the way the elements in a job are organized can act to increase or decrease effort. The job characteristics model: skill variety- the degree to which a job requires a variety of different activities. In collectivist cultures, the relationship between intrinsic motivation and job satisfaction is lower. Job rotation: repetitive jobs provide little variety, autonomy or motivation, periodic shifting from one task to another (cross-training) could increase skill variety of the job, strengths- Increases motivation: gives managers more flexibility in scheduling work, weaknesses, requires extra time for supervisors to address questions and train employees. Increasing the number of tasks performed by a worker to add greater variety to activities. Could increase skill variety of the job: horizontal restructuring increases the degree to which the worker controls the planning, execution and evaluation of the work, vertical restructuring involves assigning additional responsibility and authority to an e(cid:373)ployee"s tasks. Relational job design: making jobs more pro-socially motivating.
