NEUR1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Animal Communication, Ethology, Human Communication
Document Summary
Weak darwinism - music evolved as a side effect of the interaction between general intelligence and culture so is dependant on an existing capacity for language. Strong darwinism - musical behaviour evolved prior to language due to anatomical adaptations in response to the environment that conferred advantages in vocal communication and perception without which our species wouldn"t have survived. Archaeology - evidence of music at places in history eg. flutes in germany. Child development - formal development and individual self-discovery. Animal behaviour - parallels, animal input into human songs. Anthropology - cultural traditions (men and women singing together) Continuity paradox - if we have language we cant imagine what past humans would have had without language (pre-linguistic communication forms). Human communication is a distinct form of animal communication. Capacity to use form of respiration for song (why we can hold a note for a long time, make a continuous noise without breathing eg. lullaby).
