Maintaining self-esteem: internal: maintaining a positive sense of self, 2 ways: Internal: self control: people with higher self-control, perform better academically, better relationships, earn more money, better mental health, lower self control, blame others for failing, low grades, study: Esteem: acts as a buffer against stress. Maintaining self-esteem: external: humans perceive themselves in self-enhancing ways, try to ensure others see us in the same way, ways to ensure this though impression management, false modesty, self-handicapping.
