ALHT106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Zumba, Physical Exercise, Pediatrics
ALHT week 6 face-to-face Memory
Working memory
Baddeley’s Working Memory Model
- Phonological Loop ‘silent speech’ apparatus used to repeat words to oneself (used
in rehearsal) – related to auditory information
- Visuospatial sketchpad spatial reasoning system where we imagine and manipulate
abstract images
- Central Executive parses motivations, directs effort/attention
- Episodic Buffer the multimodal store that lasts 10-20 seconds

Working Memory
- Speech pathologist believes that Dean has working memory deficits and suggests a
referral to a neuropsychologist
- Neuropsychologist completes the Working Memory Scales (WMS) (Cohen, 1997)
- Results: poor performance on index scores for:
oAttention/concentration (decreased selective, sustained, divided attention)
oVerbal immediate memory
oVerbal delayed memory
oLearning
- Paediatrician queries formal ADHD diagnosis
Impact of Poor Attention
Strategies for poor encoding
- Elaboration linking the stimulus to other ideas or events
oMnemonics to aid the memory
- Visual Imagery holding a relevant image in the ‘mind’s eye’
oVisualising and verbalising (V&V) is a sequential program of instruction to
develop mental imagery as a base for language comprehension and thinking
Self-Relevance/Self-Reference
- Framing information as relevant to oneself rather than someone else
oBetter able to recall words if they describe yourself
oBetter able to recall birthdays that are around your own birthday
Motivation to Remember
- Explicitly thinking about possible future contexts when it may be useful
Retrieval
- How is information ‘brought back’?
- Dean’s difficulties:
oWord Finding Difficulties
Slower word recall
Poorer word fluency
oSlow rapid naming
Slowed ability to name colours, shapes, letters or numbers
Strategies for Dean:
- Mnemonic devices add additional cues for retrieval to enhance memory
oMethod of Loci: uses visual imagery as a memory aid
- Networks of association or mind/word/semantic/visual maps

Document Summary
Phonological loop silent speech" apparatus used to repeat words to oneself (used in rehearsal) related to auditory information. Visuospatial sketchpad spatial reasoning system where we imagine and manipulate abstract images. Episodic buffer the multimodal store that lasts 10-20 seconds. Speech pathologist believes that dean has working memory deficits and suggests a referral to a neuropsychologist. Neuropsychologist completes the working memory scales (wms) (cohen, 1997) Results: poor performance on index scores for: attention/concentration (decreased selective, sustained, divided attention, verbal immediate memory, verbal delayed memory, learning. Elaboration linking the stimulus to other ideas or events: mnemonics to aid the memory. Visual imagery holding a relevant image in the mind"s eye": visualising and verbalising (v&v) is a sequential program of instruction to develop mental imagery as a base for language comprehension and thinking. Framing information as relevant to oneself rather than someone else: better able to recall words if they describe yourself, better able to recall birthdays that are around your own birthday.
