In weeks 5-7 you have explored definitions of health, last week you looked at models to predict a person"s health behaviour and developed an understanding of some of these models for health behaviour change. This week we will be looking at the process of communication in a professional context and how it is embedded in the therapeutic relationship. We will also look at communication: with clients and patients, with fellow health practitioners and the difference between professional communication and communication with friends. Communication: exchanging information, symbolic arbitrary, intentional, rule governed cultural and linguistic. Sending sender encodes: verbal and nonverbal, posture, gestures, facial expression, eye contact, touch seating position. Channels media for conveying messages: e. g. Receiving - the message by the receiver: how the message is interpreted and given meaning.
