EDLA167 - Lecture 10 - Genres - Discussion and

-3 analysis of three different genres - 15%. (Between 250 and 500 words each)
Each genre is defined by: Include these in genre analysis answers in exam.

Genres:
Procedure: To instruct how a task is completed, usually in a series of sequential steps.
The how. Instructions, manual, science, experiments.
Narrative: To entertain. stories, fairy tales, myths, fables.
Discussion: To put forward a point of view, to justify a position or to present a case.
Essays, argument, debates, reviews, interpretation, evaluations.
Recount: To retell past events. Present recount or historical.
Explanation: To account for why things are as they are, why something occurs.
Explanations as to why something occurs, elaboration, illustrations, accounts.

Report: To describe or classify the way things are or seem to be, and report information.
Research reports, newspapers, justifying actions, police.
Structure:
-Statement of issue
-Arguments for and against.
-Recommendations
Grammatical Features:
-Sensing verbs - I think, we consider, they believe
-Temporal connections - first, next, also
-Casual conditional connectors - however, on the
-Exemplifying connectors - therefore, consequently
-Modal verbs - should, will, must
-Nominalisation - turning the noun into a verb
An example of the schematic structure of a discussion genre: Getting a dog - first draft
1. My Dad wants to get a dog and Mum doesn't - Statement of issue
2. Mum thinks they cost too much but Dad thinks they are fun to play with - Arguments
for and against.
3. I think dad is right that we should get a dog - Recommendation.
