What is the aim and purpose of NRSG139?
The aim of this first ‘Integrating Practice’ unit is to provide the foundations on which clinical
assessments are based, and model the way in which you will contextualise your theoretical
knowledge through clinical practice.
The purpose is to provide you with core foundational skills in preparation for clinical
practicum in Semester 2.
Observed Simulated Clinical Examination (OSCE)
● Demonstrate developing skills in assessment of physical, psychosocial and cognitive
health across the lifespan:
● Conducting a nursing health assessment interview at a beginner level and performing
peer evaluation
● Use a structured set of questions to conduct a beginning health history on a student
colleague
● Followed by a peer review process of an assessment conducted by a fellow student
How do nurses make clinical decisions?
● Requires critical thinking
○ An active process of questioning, reflecting and interpreting
○ It combines logic, intuition and creativity
○ It is thinking that assesses itself with a view to improving it
○ It is purposeful, reasoned and goal directed thinking that strives to problem
solve patient care issued through the use of clinical reasoning
● Uses clinical reasoning
○ Systematic and cyclical process that guides decision making
○ An advanced form of decision making implemented in clinical practice
settings
Critical thinking
● Clinical (diagnostic) reasoning refers to ways of thinking about patient care issues
● Clinical judgement is “the assessment of alternatives.”
● Clinical decision making refers to ‘choosing between these alternatives’.
