PHTY210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Neuroplasticity, Memory Consolidation, Strength Training
Document Summary
If the skill is low in complexity and high in organisation, practice of the whole skill is best. Spatial and temporal relationships among the parts of the skill: high level of organisation: parts are spatially and temporally interdependent. Low level of organisation: parts are relatively independent: practicing parts of a skill. Simplification examples: reduce object difficulty, reduce attention demands, reduce movement speed, add auditory cues, progressive sequences of increasing skill difficulty or complexity. If client is only able to practice a component using ineffective/inefficient methods, practice the simplified action: practice specificity, test performance is directly related to the similarity between characteristics of the practice and test (real world) conditions, practice characteristics. Feasible that several types of strengthening exercise likely to be effective: any exercise that involves muscle fibres contracting against even very small resistance likely to be beneficial, but if a certain activity"s strength threshold is reached. Likely that 1000"s of reps are needed to develop a skilled action.
