ANTH 1105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Anatomically Modern Human, Truism, Color Blindness
Document Summary
Important readings for week 5: mcintosh, trigger and gregory if you can. Disclaimer: the topic of this week"s lecture may not align with your individual religious beliefs but know that all information presented is anthropological material essential to address the course topic. The idea of race is a social truism and something that we take for granted however it is not a biological fact! Although our phenotypes may affect our definition of race, approximately 99. 9% of our genetic make-up is exceedingly similar across the drastically different gene pools of society. There is in fact only one race: homo sapiens sapiens i. e. us! The idea of race is not only relatively new but it is highly potent. Egyptian etc. texts feature no mention of the idea of race. Although they did place their society within a social hierarchy this was not based on surface appearances and differences but instead religion, class and language.
