BIOL2171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Activation Energy, Gas Constant, Collagen
Building Blocks 2
• Building blocks for nucleotides
o
o
o Technically we can synthesise all these sections it make up DNA, but we also consume it
every time we eat something, it all contains DNA
• Carbohydrate are important building blocks
o ATP used for RNA biosynthesis as well as for metabolism and energy

o
o Hydrated carbon is basically what it is
o Important in connective tissue: skin, bones and cartilage has a lot or carbohydrates
• Connective tissues hold organs in place and guard your body against mechanical
impact
• Skin is flexible, elastic and resistant to strain due to carbohydrates
• Carbohydrates have charged groups, so when they form polymers, they will
attract/keep water with them
• They soak up water giving it flexibility
•
• Cells are held in place by overall connective structures comprised by
carbohydrates and proteins (such as collagen) - ells don’t just float in a aueous
solution
