Document Summary

Usually wheelchair bound by end of life but 75% still walking 15 years after diagnosis. Symptoms can include changes in vision, muscle weakness, cognitive impairment. Ns delays oligodendrocytes via immune system conduction of axon potential may be slowed or terminated e-myelination gets less effective after multiple attacks. All these conditions involve delayed repolarisation of the cell -malfunction of any of the potassium, chloride or sodium channels. But malfunction in different types of sodium channels, expressed in different cell types. In total, 9 different sodium channels present in cells. This leads to an epileptic seizure in mice. Nerve cell would normally fire and pass info onto other cell. In epilepsy, the nerve fires as per normal the first time, and then starts firing chaotically, passing continuous impulses to other connected nerves. Nerve impulses stop when sodium channels close, or it could be an issue with potassium channels. Epilepsy can be caused by a variety of channel faults.
