1. Detail who presented the lecture and what was covered. Approx 150-200 words
The lecture was presented by two members of Mars petcare Australia, whom
manufacture and distribute pet care e.g. Whiskas, chocolate e.g. Mars, food items
e.g. Dolmio and Wrigley products e.g. Extra. It is the top Australian manufacturing
company. Chris Carter joined MARS 5 years ago and has held 4 different jobs at two
different sites. Ben joined 2.5 years ago and has held four different jobs in Wodonga.
Together, they gave an overview of a fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) company,
as well as explaining the role of engineers through using their personal insight into
MARS. Information was also provided on the company itself and the largely differing
roles of engineers within the company. These include: supply chain management
engineers, process engineers, project engineers and industrial engineers. The variety
of roles of engineers, within one company, has allowed me to understand the great
variety of careers that come from engineering, on a large scale.
2. Identify the key points of the lecture. Approx 100-150 words
Manufacturing in Australia is not common, but is very useful with food items
as they do not have to serve Australian quarantine standards.
There are a great number of locations of factories and investment is being
made for a sustainable future.
Supply chain management engineers are responsible for optimizing material
and movement requirements between suppliers, manufacturing and
customers.
Process engineers design processes that allow the products to be made. They
use requirements to guide their specifications and then spend a large amount
of time testing and validating new equipment.
Project engineers are responsible for management. Simply they are in charge
of working out where to put money as well as the safety of the workers
Industrial engineers look at the whole system of a factory. Their main role is
to design network strategies and work out how to make money.
3. Select one key point and outline how this may relate to your current and future
studies, interests or future career. Approx 200-250 words
The role of project engineering interests me and is currently very relevant in my
studies, as project manager, for our car project. I found it very interesting, learning
about the role of project engineers on a large scale. When starting a project a tender
process is used in which the process design is created from the requirements and
mars ethical standards are considered, a request for quotation is then sent to the
manufactures. Ergonomics are taken into consideration and a multi phased timeline
is created. Once all steps have been taken orders can be placed.
