ENGN1211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Systems Engineering, Blog
1. Detail who presented the lecture and what was covered
Two guests, Ash and Jeremy, presented the lecture. Ash covered the advantage of
studying system engineering, as it is not so specialized and so helpful in
humanitarian engineering when well-rounded engineering is needed at a not so
specialised level. Also covered was the importance of keeping the user central to
the project, so that the resultant system is suitable in the given culture. These
ideas were provided through Ash’s personal experience of creating an irrigation
system for a community garden in Kampot, to prevent flooding from neighboring
dams in the wet season and to provide water in the dry season.
Jeremy, the second guest lecturer spoke of past systems engineering students
who had created specific projects, through engineering based company’s to
improve the lives of those in rural areas, such as Vanuatu and Cambodia. He also
provided research and planning ideas through an example of a project in which
the classic Tuk Tuk was redesigned to be more comfortable and efficient for
those with spinal injuries. The lecture concluded by covering the way in which
and the importance of writing a project statement and Design Criteria.
2. Identify the key points of the lecture.
• In rural communities the engineers guide and give technical expertise to
help the community come up with a solution that:
o They can enforce and manage internally
o Is acceptable to the community
▪ E.g. a bike was constructed to crash grain however is
culturally insensitive as women are typically supposed to
crush gain yet aren’t supposed to participate in sport
▪ → Research and context of the project is extremely
important
• Models are a good form of communication when there are language
barriers
• Humanitarian engineering companies have been started by past students
of the course
• Similar ideas in different context should be examined e.g. look at
redesigned Tuk Tuk in urban area when redesigning in rural area
• We need to have:
o An understanding of
▪ The location
▪ Client
▪ Requirement ranking
▪ Context/culture
o Project statement
▪ States objective of project
o Design criteria
3. Select one key point and outline how this may relate to your current and
future studies, interests or future
