L3 CONCEPTS AND CASE SELECTION
- Use on method or the other
- Try and test your hypothesis. Know the limits.
- Be clear about how you could be wrong. How your hypothesis is viable.
- In terms of comparative analysis you have what you need. Have all the methodological you need.
- Justify why your used most similar or most different method.
- Have to pick the most similar cases… Need to give a few sentences for one of the two methods.
- True value ….
- Infant mortality is a good indiviator of poverty.
- Things have to be falsifiable
- Proponents of the Democratic Peace ……
Ways to avoid conceptual stretching
Way to avoid biasing your selection of cases
Poverty
- Edmund Burke: Poverty should be reserved ‘for the sick and inform, for orphan infancy, for
languishing and decrepit old age.’
- The researcher might be trying to make a case about poverty to make a significant result. WANT TO
AVOID THIS. If there is a difference between the types of poverty don’t gerrymander language to
make a point.
Conceptual Travelling
- Given most of our concepts have been derived from Western (usually Anglo) political experience,
can they travel to other cultures and different institutions?
- Think: poverty, revolution, democracy, political parties, constitution, executive, legislature, free
speech.
- We need some order of constraint to prove to sceptics.
Free Speech
- The First Amendment of US Constitution: “Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of
speech.”
