Macroe(cid:448)olution and major transitions: during the evolutionary history of life on earth, there have been several major changes in the way that information is transmitted, major innovations evolved in response to abiotic and biotic challenges. Amount of coding dna: however these definitions of complexity are not entirely satisfactory (eg: an onion has a larger genome than humans) but we can see an increase in complexity. Major transitions: maynard smith and szathmary postured- organisms have increased in complexity due to a number of major transitions. Change in how genetic information is transferred. Increasing genetic complexity: symbiosis = interactions in which two organisms live together in a close relationship that is beneficial to at least one of them. Entities that were capable of independent replication before the transition can now only replicate as part of a larger whole. Requires a new way of transmitting information.
