Define the term clinical governance.
- Governance meaning: steer; integrated approach to data driven quality
improvement and links admin and clinical staff in framework of
accountability.
- OR Clinical governance: set of relationships and responsibilities established by a
health service org between its executive, workforce and stakeholders to support
safe, quality care.
Discuss the role of clinical governance in high quality and safe patient care delivery.
Importance of governance and monitoring: licences, prof standards, increased
expectations government and institutional levels will regulate accountability.

Nurses understand quality and safety through leadership and quality and safety care is
implemented through governing bodies (is understood and ensure safest level of care is
given).
Problems healthcare without clinical governance:
Neglect caused by irrelevant governance and frameworks, incompetent managers, untrained
staff (some degree), debt, busy wards.
Unsanitary, busy ward, neglect staff, negative hand hygiene practices=infections and highest
death rates.
NHS maintained culture of working with hospital rather than promoting and enforcing safety
care. Fear of bringing down hospital.
High death rates, staff bullying/ostracising, cover ups, internal investigations led to freedom
to continue neglect.
Lacked care, lacked observations, lacked empathy, incompetence, neglect, insulting
complainers, ignoring monitors and patient calls.
Traumatised patients and carers, unhappy workplace, thousands of complaints, continuing
debt, decrease staff.
All 10 NHS standards failed completely.
Clinical governance:
Creating quality and safe nursing care and continuously improving quality and safe care
given.
Understanding importance client participation and care plans.
Apply standards, reporting and policies/procedures into care.
Continue prof development ie research or seminars.
Empower patients to experience best possible health outcomes by auditing, debriefing,
researching, education and training, risk management.
