The Endocrine System
Endocrine and nervous systems are integrated, working in co-ordination to maintain survival and
homeostasis of individual
Endocrine system controlled by:
Internal environment (humoral responses)
Nervous system (autonomic nervous system)
Other hormones (regulator hormones)
Long time required for hormone synthesis and release, transport via bloodstream, receptor binding
and action
Important endocrine glands:
Pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, thymus, adrenal glands, pancreus,
ovaries/testes
Pituitary gland: sits on small cavity in skull called sella turcica
Posterior pituitary: stores and releases hormones manufactured in the hypothalamus
Hormones transported down axons to the posterior pituitary
Two hormones: oxytocin (stimulates uterine contractions and milk ejection), anti-diuretic
hormone (stimulates renal tubules in kidneys to reabsorb water causes decreased urine output
Anterior pituitary gland: contains hormone secreting glandular tissue. No direct contact with
posterior pituitary. Rich network of blood vessels allows other hormones secreted by hypothalamus
to regulate release of hormones from anterior pituitary
Childhood hyposecretion: pituitary dwarfism (under 1m)
Childhood hypersecretion: gigantism (nearly 2.5m)
Adult hypersecretion (acromegaly): enlargement of bones in face, fingers and toes
Thyroid gland: largest “pure” gland
Rich blood supply, composed of two types of cells: follicular (secrete thyroid hormone,
effect tissue metabolism, increases glucose metabolism, promotes general growth/repair) and
parafollicular cells (secretes calcitonin, promotes bone formation, stimulates osteoblasts)
Hyperthyroidism: profuse sweating, heart rate up, nervous agitation, bulging eyes
Cretinism (hyperthyroidism in children)
