Unemployment
Labour force Survey
Every month, Australian Bureau of Statistics (the ABS) contacted 27,000 households
and ask a series of questions about the age and labour market activities of their
member
Working- age population is the total number of civilians aged 15 years and over
The working-age population is divided into those in the labour force and those not in
the labour force
Labour force is the number of people employed plus the number unemployed
The survey counts as employed all persons who, during the week before the survey,
either:
o 1. Worked at least 1 hour as an employee or in a family business or farm
o 2. We’re ot workig ut who has jos fro whih the were teporaril
absent
For unemployed:
o 1. Had no employment, and
o 2. Were available for work, and either:
1. Had actively looked for a job during the previous four weeks, or
2. We’re waitig to start a ew jo withi the et four weeks
Two Main Labour Market indicators
The unemployment rate
The labour force participation rate
The unemployment rate is the percentage of people in the labour force who are
unemployed
o Unemployment rate= number of people unemployed/ labour force x100
o In January 2015, the unemployment rate was 6.4 per cent approx.
