Acute pain is pain that lasts less than three to six months, and is often seen as a symptom of disease, or a result of an injury, such as a toothache or migraine. Chronic pain is pain that lasts for more than three to six months. 20% of adult australians suffer from chronic pain. Gate control theory of pain: developed in 1956 by ronald melzack and david wall. This theory is a very useful conceptual framework and has stood over for 40 years with some modifications. Explains the neurological mechanisms of pain and links the biology to psychological processes. Pain stimulation is carried by small, slow fibres that enter the dorsal horn of the spinal cord; then other cells transmit the impulses from the spinal cord up to the brain.
