Allergies and Intolerance:
o Allergy an immune response to a substance that is normally harmless to
most people
o Individual responses in terms of allergens and degree of reaction
o Allergen substance that causes an allergic response in an individual
o Atopy an inherited tendency to develop allergies
o People and reactions are described as atopic e.g. atopic asthma
o Symptoms that develop in response to contact with allergens
o Release of histamine
o Inflammation (Redness and swelling)
Urticarla (hives), Eczema
Rhinitis, Asthma, sneezing
Mucous membranes and tears stimulated
o Repeated exposure can lead to more intense reactions
o Children can ‘outgrow’ early allergies, adults can develop new
allergies
Anaphylaxis
o Is a severe and sudden allergic reaction
o Can occur when a susceptible person is exposed to an allergen (such as
certain foods or an insect sting)
o Reactions usually begin with minutes of exposure and can progress
rapidly over a period of up to 2 hours or more
o Anaphylaxis is potentially life-threatening always requires an
emergency response
Histamine
o Protein released by white blood cells in response to antigens causing
inflammation
o Antigens: Substances identified as foreign and dangerous to the body e.g.
viruses, bacteria, allergens
o Inflammation: a protective reaction, cells flooded with blood fluids carrying
infection fighting cells into infected tissue
Intolerance and ‘Adverse Reactions’
o Reactions to foods, additives and drugs that DO NOT involve an immune
response are an intolerance or adverse reaction
o Digestive problems, vomiting or diarrohea e.g. lactose intolerance
o Headaches
o Behavioural symptoms; controversial but known
Psychosocial and learning implications of behavioural issues
Restriction of diet possibly preferable to drug treatment but
needs supervision (nutritional issues)
o Still potentially serious implications: health issues arise with intolerance to
medications, continued digestive issues; discomfort and embarrassment,
potential social participation and isolation issues
Sources of Allergens:
o Inhaled: breathed
