Can"t understand distribution of power in society without looking at both economic and social structure (power). 3 distinct ways power is distributed in society: economic structure (cid:272)lass, party spe(cid:272)ifi(cid:272) ai(cid:373) of (cid:271)ri(cid:374)gi(cid:374)g a(cid:271)out a change. Economic and social structures are related, but exert independent influence. Status and culture: culture can be understood as "style of life" e(cid:373)a(cid:374)ati(cid:374)g fro(cid:373) status groups (cid:272)o(cid:373)es fro(cid:373) status groups who share values, culture provides the assumptions that lie behind behaviour. Important in shaping behaviour: culture is what"s assumed to be "normal, provides meaning and a sense a sense of certainty. Structure/agency and culture: agency may place a formative role through status groups, particular sub-cultural trends may emerge through values.
