Propinquity effect: the finding that the more we see and interact with people, the more likely they are to become our friends. Why: availability, anticipation of interaction, familiarity. Mere exposure effect: the finding that the more exposure we have to a stimulus, the more apt we are to like it. The more often students had seen a women in class, the more they liked them. Opposite if you feel negative toward the person. People are more comfortable revealing their true self to a partner over the internet compared with face to face interaction. People disclose more personal information, therefore relationships form faster. Similarity: attraction to people who are like us. Attractiveness can lead to perceptions of similarity. Complementarity: attraction to people who are opposite to us. Reciprocal thinking: when you like someone and that person likes you. Can only occur if you like yourself in the first place. We are also affected by people"s looks.
