Travels from vagina to fallopian tube where fertilization takes place. Life span is 48 hours to a few days. Egg is ovulated out of the ovary and travels to fallopian tube. * when the sperm enters the body, only about 100 sperm survive to get to the egg there is an exponential reduction. * when the sperm first enter the female, the sperm first interacts with the secretions of the vagina (coming from the cervix), and they undergo a maturation process called capacitation. This enables them to start wriggling and undergo and enzymatic reaction/acrosomal reaction that is necessary when they reach the egg to be able to burrow in. * we want a single successful sperm one sperm to fertilise the egg. * sperm binds to the egg and implants its nucleus (its dna) into the cytoplasm of the egg. * the ovary squeezes the egg out during ovulation.
