Document Summary
Cognitive models of memory, memory mental process of acquiring and retaining information for later retrieval. Implicit vs explicit memory does not measure cognitive theory; used to describe outcomes of memory tasks: procedural vs declarative memory derived from dissociable cognitive theories; more meaningful in studies of amnesia, procedural memory. Supported by memory systems that are independent of hippocampal formation: declarative memory. Allows 3 types of memory processing: recall and recognition in different settings and ability to manipulate the information internally. This system is the outcome of processing by various processing systems which feed the hippocampal formation. Declarative memory is relational due to the relational nature of hippocampal formation (cerebellum, basal ganglia, motor cortical sites) Activation of declarative memory -> activation of related memories. Memory activation can be independent of environment: 4 models of memory. Serial models: atkinson-shiff(cid:396)i(cid:374) model, le(cid:448)els of p(cid:396)o(cid:272)essi(cid:374)g model, tul(cid:448)i(cid:374)g"s model. Limit of 5 +/- 2 items in sensory memory.
