Obsessive-compulsive disorder (ocd, diagnostic criteria, obsessions and compulsions are recurrent and persistent, the individual recognises that they are being excessive and unreasonable, obsessions/compulsions: Are time consuming (take up more than an hour a day) Significantly interfere with functioning and relationships: obsessions, persistent ideas, thoughts, impulses or images that are experienced as intrusive and inappropriate and cause marked anxiety or distress. Highly distressing and affects how the individuals evaluates themselves. Eg. thoughts of harming loved ones: the individual recognises that these thoughts are the product of their own mind, common types of obsessions. Repeated doubts -> concerning safety and scruples. Need to have things in a particular order. Aggression and fear of contamination are the most common: compulsions, repetitive behaviour or mental acts which act to prevent or reduce anxiety. Behaviours handwashing, checking of household appliances etc. Mental acts praying, counting, repeating words silently etc.
