Is censorship and regulation always damaging to online communication: dahlberg describes four "digital democracy positions". Internet: physical infrastructure, cables connecting different computers and systems together. Subcultural origins of the internet: hacker subcultures, phreaks, homebrew, etc, video games, rise and fall of activision, hippies and libertarians, cyber-libertarianism. Silicon valley culture: area outside of san francisco that makes electronic equipment, combines the hippie/libertarian with corporate capitalism, maintains an ethos of individualism, free-market competition and innovation while simultaneously monopolistic and benefiting from publicly-funded research. 1950s - cold war drives the development of information technology. 1969 - arpranet goes live (becomes international in 1973, closes in 1990) 1982 - tcp/ip (the word internet used for the first time) 1989 - sir tim berners lee invents the world wide web. 1991 - us nsf lifts restrictions on the commercial use of the internet. 1993 - cern makes the www open to all.
