Enthusiasm for watching sport on tv is often regarded as a "health hazard" with couch-bound sports viewers seen as. "outsourcing" their physical activities to sportspeople performing them on screen: while not all television watching involves sport, it is a signifcant component of it, with almost 3 mil australians watching the opening ceremony of the london 2012 olympics. Sport annually features heavily among the most-watched programs on australian free-to-air television, and completely dominates them on pay tv. The ideological uses and consequences of media sport. The media do much more than represent sport, they also attach a range of sociocultural meanings to it. The "communicative dirt" that is sprinkled around via the media, picking up different connotations and being put to different symbolic uses. E. g. , media sport overwhelmingly focuses on men, with international studies consistently showing that sports journalism mostly involves men writing about other men, with women"s sport generally well below.
