She speaks, reads, and writes 4 languages, including English. Her brother finally graduated from the University of Arkansas in May 2016 after 8 years! Why did it happen this way?? They were raised the same way by the same parents. Why was my granddaughter drove to succeed and my grandson so listless?

Then there is subjective valuation and opportunity cost. Opportunity cost is nothing more than what you have to give up to do something else. Some of you might have to roll out of the bar or the party a little before you wanted to leave just to be able to attend my class. You might also have to give up some precious sleep. In any event, you had to give up something to attend my class. That's the opportunity cost. Remember, everything you do has a price (opportunity cost) that must be paid according to Harry Browne who wrote, How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World.) To do one thing you must give up the opportunity to do something else.

When people decide to buy a product or service they must decide if it will satisfy a need or want at a price they are willing to pay. The number one reason that people buy the products or services they do is called Personal Tastes or Preferences (Subjective valuation). Everyone has a different price they are willing to pay for the same product or service. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. That's a subjective valuation. Each of us has a different intensity of demand for the same products. Things you want I may not care for at all, and the opposite may also be true. This is why there is such a variety of goods and services offered on the market.

Subjective valuation is also fluid. As your income goes either up or down it changes your valuation of products and services. Have you ever wanted something so bad you would do almost anything to get it---an i phone or I pad?---but once you get the money you think, "do I really want this?' and you don't buy it. This is common. If it were not for a subjective valuation we would all be wearing the same style and color clothes and living in similar houses, etc. Wouldn't that be a wonderful world! I'd find the tallest building in downtown Orlando and see if I could fly! It is not the similarity in people that interests me. It's the differences. It's my desire not to be like everyone else that has driven my life. Don't strive to be someone else. Strive to find and be yourself. God save me from a terminal case of conventional wisdom!

Give me an example of subjective valuation.

In order to understand how cells function, we often have to use analogies to everyday items or processes to explain the jobs of the various organelles. In this assignment, we're asking you to determine which everyday items that you can find around the house (from your kitchen/desk drawers, backpack, a recycling bin, food, etc.) to represent the organelles inside a cell, and to assemble those items into a 3-dimensional representation of a eukaryotic (plant or animal) cell. Think about how the items you're using can best represent the various parts of the cells and their functions. For example, what does the mitochondria do? What household item do you have that is analogous, or could represent that function?

Note that the items that you find may or may not visually resemble their cellular counterparts. It's fine if they don't - we’re looking for you to demonstrate to us that you know what the various organelles do, and that you can think creatively about what objects fill that role in your house or in your life. Therefore, your finished "model" may not look much (or at all) like the diagram of a cell from your textbook! However, if the spatial organization of organelles is important (e.g. if one type of organelle is always located next to another), we do expect to see that reflected in your model.

Your model will need to include:

A picture (or pictures) of your model. The picture(s) must contain your name written on a piece of paper next to your model. If you'd like, include a picture of yourself with your model. (A cell-fie!)

Proper identification of the cell (is it a plant or animal cell)?

For each organelle/structure:

Correct labeling/identification of the structure in your image/video

A description of the organelle's function, which should be in YOUR OWN WORDS, not copied from the book, lectures, or other sites.

A justification for why the object that you chose to represent each organelle is a good analogy for that organelle's function.

Attention to quality and creativity – which will weigh into the overall evaluation.

You can do this in a text document, a powerpoint presentation, or a short video in which you verbally explain your model (be sure to include your name in the video!). Note that you will NOT receive credit for a drawing of a cell or a collage or collection of images found online. Any images you submit must be completely original and made by you. Your name should be in any document and/or picture you submit. Submissions without names will receive reduced credit.

This is NOT intended to be a burdensome exercise, nor should you need to purchase any materials to complete this assignment - I would like for it to be a fun way for you to practice working with the different types of organelles and their structures and functions, and to think creatively about the materials you have on hand.

It is no secret that the internet is the next large mediamarket. As a football fan I can remember in 2015 when Yahoostreamed their first game, it was streamed online as opposed tobeing broadcasted by a TV network (I forget who played, but as aBroncos fan last year was a much happier time in my life). However,the internet has many advantages, not only is it more broad in itsreach (Facebook has over 1 billion accounts as of 2016), but canalso be cheaper to access. Most small businesses use the internetto advertise exclusively (MarketingProf). Advertising online can beextremely valuable, especially as the line between entertainment,advertising and pop culture are all blurred away. Facebookmarketing allows big ticket clients who wish to advertise onFacebook to earn access to a huge wealth of marketing informationon their 1 billion customers; this includes profile data, posts,friends, and most significantly, groups and subscriptions (Chang).This data allows marketers to strike with surgical precision. Theymay already be able to tell you're looking for that exact product,and when you anticipate on buying. These ads can be sneaked intothe content you interact with in such a manner that you might noteven realize you are browsing an ad. Furthermore, watching a newsbroadcast this morning, the news anchor began discussing herweekend plans, talking about having grilled Christmas dinner withher family. She casually mentioned the brand name of the grill thatshe had used, and showed an instagram photo of her, with the brandname of the grill casually, unobtrusively, yet clearly visible.This sort of marketing via social networking is a trick as old astime, the celebrity endorsement. However, by making it less obviousto the casual viewer it merely appears as an anecdote from acelebrity, and the grill brand name merely an added bonus ofinteracting with celebrities online; discovering how they live.Even more subtle, and my favorite example of a viral marketingcampaign is the following video. I recommend watching it, withoutreading more of my post if you are unfamiliar with it. If you areunfamiliar, ask yourself if you can catch the ad.

For those of you unfamiliar did you catch the ad? Turns out thisvideo is fake, and was created by CGI with the intent of marketinga brand. I honestly saw the video, and did not detect it was fake,did not realize it was an ad. It was shared "virally" on socialnetworks. My friends were advertising on a companies behalf, andentertaining me, and did not even realize it. The ad in this video,if you haven't guessed, was the logo displayed on the wing justprior to the landing, "KILLA". This advertising was extremelyeffective for building brand awareness, and no one realized how.Personally, I had no clue who Killa was, or what they sold.However, if later in my life, if I hadn't realized the marketingaspect, if I saw the brand name Killa, I would have recognized itas a sports advertiser, and probably assumed the company was largerand more established, and hence the products moresuccessful/valuable then otherwise. I was just being primed tolater be exposed to a company, predisposed to believe in theirprowess due to a viral video.
