Week 5 -Organised Crime
• Organised crime can take place in one area, not necessarily transnational crime
• Transnational crime is a product of globalisation
o Ie Italian Mafia used to only effect Italy, but globalisation has made it spread
• Greater cross border legal flows create opportunities for illegal flows
• Globalization creates motivation for participation in illicit markets -global inequality is a
driver
o Most victims come from weak countries
o Global economies for illicit markets -most countries are poor
• Criminal organisations:
o Triads (china)
o Yakuza/Boryokudan (Japan)
o Outlaw MCG (Australia)
o Cosa Nostra (Sicilian Mafia)
o N’draghetta souther Italia Mafia
• What they do
o Deal in fraud/ take advantage of people
o Make them appear to be legitimate through brochures and web pages
o Operate as authentic businesses
o Cybercrime -recently, election tampering in the US
o Steal information to plan attacks or use for malicious interests
o Drug trafficking
o Diversifying -multiple drugs, other types of crimes
o Work in families or just for money

o Thousands of criminals working in structures -corporation complexity
o Have laws -ofte ore ridged tha gov’t
o Actions are a result of intricate conspiracies carried out over many years
o Aim to gain control over whole fields of activity to gain huge profit

o Ability to conceal criminal activity by integrating into legitimate markets

▪ Laundering of drug money in legitimate industries
o Technology and online capabilities
▪ Reflects adoption of these by the public
▪ To prove reach and anonymity from law enforcement
▪ Some groups hire own techies to do things
o The globalisation of organised crime
▪ Vary in reach and sophistication
▪ Some elite groups target multiple countries simultaneously
▪ Highly networked, professional and funded
▪ Have professional (legal and financial) advice -operate in gaps and avoid
detection
