Why do people commit particular types of crime. Generally takes place in private (online, etc) Offenders" are legitimately present at the scene" - they have a right or reason to be there. Involves abuse of trust inherent in the occupational role. Often involves some form of insider" knowledge. No immediate physical threat (so) it is less a source of fear or anxiety than other forms of crime. Determining responsibility may be problematic- resources aren"t always there to do it. Ambitious legal and criminal status- bending the rules is normal, rarely questioned or challenged. Men are 5 times more likely to commit white collar crimes then women. Due to discrimination, women aren"t in higher positions to commit these crimes. Education and opportunity: most white collar criminals are educated. Often strain occurs in their life- financial issues. Comes down to opportunity: crime of privilege. May affect entire communities rather than individuals. Sometimes it is difficult to identify individual victims.
