Kitty genovese attacked outside her home, she called for help, attack went for 45 mins, no one came to her aid, and eventually she died even though one man had called the police. Latane and darley the bystander effect when the presence of others inhibits helping. Hypothesis was that the number of people involved would negatively impact the responsibility felt by each bystander. Participants sit in a room filling questionnaires, smoke enters the room. Three conditions, alone, with two strangers and with two research participants. The alone participant was much more likely to seek for help then with the two research assistants. Darley and latane participants talked about campus life over intercom, thought they were talking to one or up to five other people. If alone much more likely to help them then if perceived to have others on the phone as well. Emergency intervention decision tree: notice the emergency in a hurry, less likely to notice.
