In may 1967, 90. 77% of australians voted yes" in a referendum: The parliament shall, subject to this constitution, have power to make laws for the peace, order, and good government of the commonwealth with respect to:- (xxvi) the people of any race, other than the aboriginal people in any state, for whom it is necessary to make special laws. In reckoning the numbers of the people of the commonwealth, or of a. State or other part of the commonwealth, aboriginal natives should not be counted. Recognition of indigenous australia is for the purpose of recognition and lcosing the gap. Thanks to the 1967 referendum indigenous people are now not mentioned in the constitution (before they were mentioned twice in a negative light, but it was removed). Since then it has been argued to have another referendum to change the constitution to recognise indigenous australians in a positive way in the constitution.
