PSY251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: White Matter, Nylon, Homeostasis
Document Summary
Psy25-lecture 2 what is the nervous systems functional anatomy. Dorsal-towards the backs (in humans: top of the head) Ventral-toward the stomach (in humans: bottom of the head) Responsible for carrying information to and from the central nervous system (cns) Conveys messages to and from the cns. Is involved with fight/flight and freeze response. Prepares the organs for vigours activity,it is what protects us when we perceive a threat. Comprised of the brain and spinal cord. Sends information from sensory neurons in the body to the brain. Sends messages from the brain to motor neurons in the muscles and organs. Area responsible/controls basic functions e. g. heartbeat, respiration, balance and contributing to some movement. Responsible for vital reflexes-actions are involuntary or done without thought e. g. breating, heart rate, salivation, coughing, vomiting. It plays a role in sleep and consciousness and behavioural arousal. Connects the upper and lower parts of the brain. Relays the messages from the cortex and cerebellum.
