NSB103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Glasgow Coma Scale, Central Nervous System, Somatic Nervous System
Week 7: Neurological Assessment
Anatomy of Neurological System
- Central Nervous System (CNS)
o Brain and cranial nerves
o Spinal cord
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
o Afferent division – message to brain
o Efferent division – message from brain
▪ Somatic nervous system (voluntary)
▪ Autonomic nervous system (involuntary)
Subjective Data
- Health history
o Pain in head or nerves
o Altered sensation
o Altered function (e.g. gait, weakness, speech)
o Dizziness, seizures
o Head injury/surgery
o Medication/drug use
Objective Data
- Inspection – symmetry, trauma, colour, lesions, scars
- Mental Status – level of consciousness
- Cranial nerves – symmetry of face, smile, puff cheeks
- Motor System – strength, equal movement
- Sensory system – sensation
- Reflexes
Assessment of Mental Status (Glasgow Coma Scale) out of 15
- Eye Opening – observe patiet’s alertness
o Spontaneous – eyes open already

Document Summary
Central nervous system (cns: brain and cranial nerves, spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns: afferent division message to brain, efferent division message from brain, somatic nervous system (voluntary, autonomic nervous system (involuntary) Health history: pain in head or nerves, altered sensation, altered function (e. g. gait, weakness, speech, dizziness, seizures, head injury/surgery, medication/drug use. Cranial nerves symmetry of face, smile, puff cheeks. Assessment of mental status (glasgow coma scale) out of 15. Eye opening observe patie(cid:374)t"s alertness: spontaneous eyes open already, speech eyes open on speech, pain eyes only open to painful stimulus (e. g. pinch nail bed, none no response. Verbal response: orientated able to correctly response to name, date of birth and time, confused may know one of the three. Inappropriate gives an answer but not to your question (e. g. picnic) Best motor response how they follow commands, if no response commence response to pain: obeys commands, localise to pain, withdrawal, flexion, extension, none.
