Cultural Context

•Many 1st person skills are liberal Western concepts

•Why?

•Accepted roles,e expectations about behaviour, respect for ‘authority’ and a concept of

‘social self’ may be more dominant in many cultures which makes assertiveness

•Non-liberal Western culture

•In some cultures, disagreements are not always openly expressed and people appear to

accommodate others

•Assertiveness / ‘I’ Language

•Ask person their opinion on their performance

•Empathy

Empathise with emotion - NOT behaviour; understand how they are feeling, there is no need

to condone what they are doing
