Cities have some distinctive characteristics compared to rural areas: large concentration of people, economy based on non-agricultural activities, specialised land uses, wide range of services, infrastructure, distinctive way of life. Geographers have divided cities into 3 categories, based on dominant function: market centres (centre place theory, transportation centres, specialised service centres. Central place theory christaller 1933: transportation cities, located along rail lines, coastlines, major rivers, specialised service centres, dominated by a single function e. g. manufacturing, mining, government, education, tourism e. g. canberra (government city) , ] = employment statistics (if the majority are employed in the one sector, = specialised service centre) Urban economies: 4 categories of basic economic functions/activities: Invasion and succession: as people gain class, they will invade the next zone. As well as economic activity spilling out into next zone: commuters zone high class housing (30 60km away from cbd) Sector theory hoyt- focused on patterns of housing value based on rent.
