• Generally means the creation of new research (academia)
• A careful hunting for facts or truth about a subject
Structured Research

Professional research terms
• Primary data- data you gather yourself
• Secondary data – something that already exists
• Empirical data – real world, often human subject matter
• Quantitative research – how many
• Qualitative research – opinions and values
• Reliability- same result on repeated trials
• Validity – designed to measure exactly
• Thesis statement – single with topic and point-of-view
• Hypothesis – predicted results
Evaluating what you find on the net
1. Authorship
• Is an author or source clearly indicated? Can they be contacted?
• Look at the address – does it contain edu or gov?
2. Accuracy
• Is here documentation to indicate the source of the information?
• Is there a bibliography or links to other useful sites?
