Document Summary

Structure - way/ pattern they are put together. Isomers - objects that have the same forumla but different structures. Structural isomers: sometimes called constitutional isomers, atoms connected in different ways or in a different order, different physical and chemical properties, sometimes the differences are modest. Sometimes the differences are greater: structural isomers can have different functional groups. Conformational isomers: when structures appear to be different but can be interconverted by rotating about single bonds, barrier to rotation about single bonds is low, an infinite number of conformations exist about any single bond. Some conformations are higher in energy than others: this means that some are less stable than others, e. g ethane, staggered conformations are more stable than eclipsed conformations, the substitutes are further away from one another in staggered form. Eclipsed conformation are higher energy (less stable) than staggered conformations. Identical - same molecule but drawn back view and front view.
