When is it too risky to exercise: during an acute febrile illness, complicated pregnancy, recovering from heat illness, too soon post surgery, unstable chronic disease, some heart conditions. Absolute contraindications to exercise: recent mi or change in resting ecg, myocardial infarction = heart attack, blocked coronary artery, heart tissue dies. Inflammation of the pericardium (sac around the heart) or myocardium (heart muscle: suspected or known dissecting aneurysm, blood vessel balloons and ruptures, suspected or known dissecting aneurysm, acute infections. Relative contraindications to exercise: must be suspended if risks outweigh the benefits of exercise, use low intensities only, must be asymptomatic at rest, use caution, monitor! Examples: coronary stenosis, stenotic valvular disease, electrolyte abnormalities, severe hypertension (180/110, tachycardia (>100 bpm) or bradycardia (<60bpm, cardiomyopathy, neuromuscular, musculoskeletal or rheumatoid disorders, aneurysm, uncontrolled metabolic disease, chronic infectious disease (e. g glandular fever, hepatitis, aids)
