It is an event or thing which causes something else to occur/happen. In clinical psychology it is the factors which cause symptoms to occur. These causal factors always come before the presence of symptoms. There can be distal or proximal causal factors. Example: imagine a car crash where a person dies. The distal cause might be drinking alcohol before driving. The proximal cause might be the telegraph pole.
