Endoscopy (gastroscopy/colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy), laparoscopy, radiology using contrast medium (barium meal), faecal fat collection, faecal occult blood, ph monitoring, breath tests, pancreatic function tests, intestinal motility tests, oesophageal manometry. Causes: strictures of oesophagus, spasm, swallowed foreign body, anxiety reflux disease, cancer, stomatitis/pharyngitis/tonsillitis, severe iron deficiency anaemia. Investigations: full blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate: x-ray/endoscopy/biopsy, ct scan, oesophageal motility studies. Management: dilatation of oesophagus, surgical resection, muscle relaxants/antacids, correct iron deficiency. Inflammation of oesophagus, usu. due to acid reflux from stomach. Symptoms: dull retrosternal ache (heart burn), pain radiating to throat/back regurgitation, dental erosion. Signs: no signs in early stages: advanced stages: haematemesis, anaemia, aspiration pneumonia. Investigations: endoscopy with/out biopsy, ba meal x-ray, oesophageal motility studies (ecg rule out heart disease)
