Week 4 EDUC Lecture
Cultural Capital:
• Every student has a cultural capital – virtual schoolbags
• The urrey that is eeded to sueed
• Fuds of Koledge – what is happening in their life at home and community
(often ignored at school) – conduct ethnographic research into what makes up a life
• Life Worlds – students in a broader sense and the funds of knowledge connect to
these worlds can be diverse in a class – subjectivities of your position in life (eg as a
student, with different priorities), argued from our own perspectives, can try to see
ad uderstad fro others poit of ie
• Narratives – stories of a persos life (something important to the individual or the
community), such as your name
• Persona – grabs and grabbles with the idea of identity (extravert/ introvert/ how you
present yourself to the world/ presenting a version and what it means)
• Affinity – worldviews, faith, political and personal values/ attitudes (can be diverse
and to the extremes), media choices that you make – children have their own
opinions, who am I as a person in the world
• Orientation – preferred ways of knowing/learning/communicating
Virtual Schoolbags:

Equity vs Equality:
• Equality – treating everyone the same, but uneven in outcomes
• Equity – giving more help to different people
• Cannot treat everyone the same as we are not the same
• People who have not been able to take part are now able to
• Put in actions to enable people to succeed, eg scholarships, hecs, visiting school (give
them the idea of study and make them want to)
Teachers Can:
• Aim to provide equitable chances for all students to succeed in school.
• Transform relationships with families so they are more inclusive, respectful &
collaborative.
• Value family knowledge
• Understand how teacher/family relationships are power relationships (deficit
thinking)
• Aim to make a difference
