The medical model was the idea that disability could be solved through medical interventions (e. g. , fixing limbs etc. ) The social model was about providing open access to people with a disability. The focus went from curing disability, to providing access to disabled people. Dr. guttmann organised the first wheelchair games in stoke mandeville in 1948. Games for the deaf were the first international disability games in 1924. In 2000, the spanish team won gold in intellectual disability basketball, but half the team were not intellectually disabled. There was lot of resistance against letting people with an intellectual disability compete in the. For paralympic athletes, the paralympic games are very elite; but they also understand that it is about educating able-bodied people about their issues. Paralympic sport is both a cultural event (celebration and awareness of people with a disability) but it is also about winning. A major issue around disability sport is whether it is about rehabilitation or elite competition.
