Document Summary

Lecture 9 the evolution of tribalism: implications for. Intra group aggression is more a function of motivation and restraint because we"re always around members of our group: variability far more within groups than between groups. Ingroup assortativeness and combines parasite stress positive correlation. Sanction free contribution vs sanctioning institution (punishment if you fail to contribute) average contribution in both: over time people switch from sanction free to sanctioning, higher contribution in sanction group, punishment works better to get people to contribute. Fairness --> determines what group we join: evolved to be self-deceptive hypocrites, good at detecting others as hypocrites but not ourselves, why would self-deception evolve? (trivers, 1976) Stands in the way of getting along with others: lie to ourselves to more effectively lie to others, lie to ourselves to make ourselves feel better. Self-deception can extend to in-group members --> groups will tend to feel chronically mistreated by other side.
