- A claim combines an internal connection between two ideas
- Claims can be linked

- Some statements may be broad/sweeping, and will need to be tightened to make an
argument
- Depends on how much evidence you have to back it up
Complex analytical structures
- More than two levels of connection
- Draw mind maps to link ideas shows gaps in the logic and what the argument relies on
Independent and Dependent Claims
- Can have many independent claims, and then one other claim that is dependent on all of
those
How to plan
- Decide what conclusion will be write out this claim carefully (#1)
- Think about reasons for conclusion
Write these as claims/premises for why conclusion should be accepted
Write them out (do not use pronouns or words that might signal link between them)
Number them from 2 onwards
Is there more than one claim in a statement?
- Draw a diagram for the relationship between claims
- Are you mixing any claims?
- Make changes if needed
Do not include links between claims
