Nouns:
regular/irregular nouns
common/proper nouns
concrete/abstract nouns
count/non‐count or mass nouns
collective nouns
pronouns
name of a person, place or thing
Nouns:
can inflect (change form) to show number
can inflect to show possession (by adding an ‘s’)
can combine with determiners and adjectives
can modify other nouns (closed, hyphened and open) – compound nouns
can function as subjects, objects, and complements of verbs
Common vs Proper:
Common – general people, places and things
Proper – specific to people, places and things
Concrete vs Abstract:
Concrete – something perceivable by the senses (see, hear, smell, taste, touch)
Abstract – not tangible (actions, events)
Count vs Mass (non‐count):
Count – nouns you can count
Mass – can’t be counted (quantities and made plural)
Can function as either
Count (number) and Mass (amount)
Count (fewer) and Mass (less)
Plurals:
Add ‘s’ to regular nouns
add ‘es’
