the issue of play and unintentional childhood injuries.
play forms an important part of physical, cognitive, emotional and social development
Are there certain types of play that are more likely to lead to unintentional childhood injuries
and what are some of the challenges associated with the prevention of these injuries?
1. Individual (e.g., the child and the impact of physical, emotional and cognitive development...)
The importance of play:
Social skills - when they play with other children they learn to communicate, share, collaborate and
empathise with others.
Imagination and creativity - outside play is often open-ended and children need to be creative about
what and how games are played.
Thinking and problem solving skills - as children assess risks and tackle new challenges they learn
about having a go, persistence and perseverance and the success those attributes can bring.
Sense of self - as they master new skills and play with other children they improve their competence
and confidence in their own physical and social abilities.
Sense of connection - to place, to peers and to their local community and environment.
Self-care skills - managing physical and social challenges helps children to learn about keeping
themselves safe.
Children are constantly exposed to different forms of playful activities which provide kids with opportunity to
dev mentally and physically (positive for well being).
Free play is the play that causes unintentional injuries as it lacks external rules and structure and is intrinsically
motivated by the children.
Socially children may feel embarrassed if an accident or injury has happened as they may want to hide or
forget about what has happened and shy away from their friends. This could result in missing scholl to
recover.
2. Relational (e.g., the family, parents, schools, neighbourhoods, day-care...)
The majority of injuries occurred in the home, followed by other place, referring to a place that
does not fit within a designated category, an unknown location, and a school or residential
institution
*Impacts felt by family, school/daycare and local government as they are forced to deal with the impacts of a
traumatic injury/event at such a young age. This could reduce in a child’s independence as they are
scared or worried about recurring injury’s.
*Injury to child may affect their physical health. Repercussions of the injury are huge with high costs
associated with treatment and ongoing rehabilitation if the injury was severe.
*If they are young, parents may have to take time off work which leads to a decrease in income in order to
provide support and cover needs of the child.
