ED3662 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Shared Experience, Australian Curriculum, Swimming Pool
Week One
Lecture One: Introduction to Measurement and Length
Attributes of Measurement
- 7 Attributes
o Length
o Area
o Volume – How much space does a shape occupy
▪ Swimming pool – how much do we need to dig to fit the pool in?
o Capacity – liquid form (L, mL etc)
▪ Swimming pool – how much do we need to fill the pool?
o Mass
o Time
o Temperature
- Angle – features in the Australian Curriculum in geometric reasoning rather than measurement
Measurement
- Unfortunately, many measurement lessons are basically number lessons given in a measurement
context
- Booker, Bond, Sparrow, and Swan (2014)
Why Teach It?
- Allows us to quantify the world
- Desire to compare – he is taller/shorter than me
o We love to compare
- Over time question of “how much taller?” arises
- Therefore, there is a need to measure and then quantify the measurement
- Terrific vehicle for integration across the curriculum and across other maths strands
o Science
▪ Graphing, data, measurement
▪ History and Social Sciences
o Art
o Music
o Language
o Society and environment
o Health and physical education
▪ How high, distance, timing
- Numeracy – Measuring skills are essential
- for coping with every day experiences
Measurement
- Key to all measurement ideas is the notion of comparison.
- All measurement is approximate.
- Estimation is important otherwise the concentration is on numbers
- Students are required to:
o Identify and understand the nature of the different physical attributes that can be
measured
o Understand the way in which units are used to quantify amounts of attributes to needed
levels of accuracy
